  The last 100 years have seen tremendous turmoil and change.  Through it all, Japan-America Society of the State of Washington has been a beacon of hope, friendship and understanding between the people of Washington State and Japan.  As the Society Builds Bridges to the Next Century, it looks forward to finding new ways to fulfill its mission and remain relevant in an ever-changing world.

  Strong bridges are built by many people working together, united by a common goal.  For the next century, the Society will build new bridges by increasing its presence in Washington State and Japan, expanding its membership base, creating a special fund for centennial celebrations, and inspiring board members to lean in and be involved throughout the centennial year. 

  In this centennial year, it is especially important to give extra financial support to enable the Society to set the tone for a new century of service.

  JASSW will hold a training workshop for 2 JIS programs:

  Japan in a Suitcase (JS): Taro & Hanako

  This presentation follows a Japanese third grader named Taro through his day in school.  Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use chopsticks, speak some simple Japanese phrases, see textbooks Taro uses in class.  Hanako is a separate presentation following an eight grader.

  
  

  Japanese Language and Culture Visits (JLCV):  

  Customs, Shopping, Restaurant

  These presentations give high school Japanese language students an opportunity for Japanese immersion in "real life" situations, using the skills they have learned in class.If you are a new volunteer, or have been away for awhile, please come to train in our new, updated presentations.

Our Annual Meeting is a great opportunity to learn about the structure of the Society and to meet the people who keep it alive. Join us for an inspiring talk from our guest, Commissioner Toshiko Hasegawa of the Port of Seattle, and for our networking session with light refreshments, with sake provided by Shirafuji Sake Brewery from Woodinville, WA.

  Keynote Speech

  Commissioner Toshiko Grace Hasegawa

  

  Toshiko is a fourth-generation Japanese American and a lifelong resident of the Beacon Hill neighborhood in South Seattle. A daughter of the labor movement and descendant of World War II incarcerees, Toshiko's passion for public service is fueled by her commitment to civil rights and promoting fairness in government operations.

  She believes the Port of Seattle holds the key to a robust economy, healthy environment, and thriving communities. She hopes to help the Port be a leader in bringing together stakeholders to build our port economy back to be more inclusive, sustainable, and abundant. Her priorities include addressing supply chain issues, expanding economic opportunities, and reducing pollution.

  Toshiko was appointed by Governor Jay Inslee as Executive Director of Washington State’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs in 2018. In that capacity, she serves in the Governor’s Subcabinet on Business Diversity, the Disaster Resiliency Workgroup, the Deadly Force Task Force, and other state committees. Hasegawa worked as a staff member for the Office of Law Enforcement Oversight for King County, where she worked to promote transparency and accountability in policing operations. She also worked in the Office of King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, working closely on issues of Human Labor Trafficking.

  Toshiko holds a Master’s degree from Seattle University and lives in her family home on Beacon Hill with her husband Michael and daughter Keiko Rose.

  Join us for a great day at the gorgeous Newcastle golf course! Come join your fellow colleagues for some fun on the green and an opportunity to meet some of the most prominent people in the community!

  Volunteer tasks: set-up, tear down, registration, putting & chipping contests, awards ceremony, and other tasks as necessary

  You can volunteer for the full day, the Morning shift, or the Afternoon shift. Food will be provided to all volunteers.

  Full Day Shift: 9:30 am to 8:30 pm

  Help at registration and our putting & chipping contests and volunteer on the green to record the various contests! After the tournament, help out at the Awards Dinner by selling raffle tickets, running auction items & raffle tickets, and generally enjoy the evening!

  Join us for one of our biggest fundraisers of the year! Enjoy a great day of golf during the Society's Centennial year at the gorgeous Newcastle golf course and network with friends and colleagues while supporting the Society and our mission.

  Why join the tournament? The Japan-America Society of the State of Washington is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Thanks to the support of our members and community, our staff, volunteers, and board members have continued to fulfill our mission to promote friendship and understanding between the peoples of Japan and Washington State.

  Our Golf Tournament is our biggest summer fundraisers and a popular event for our members and the community. The funds raised from the tournament help support our various education, business, and cultural programming - including:

  • Our Japan In the Schools (JIS) program, where staff and volunteers bring a hands-on experience of various Japanese cultural and language lessons into the classrooms,
  • Our America In the Schools program, which runs similarly to our JIS program and provides free curriculum and resources for schools and educators in Japan to teach their students about U.S. culture and schools
  • JAS-Net networking socials to bring people together over drinks, karaoke, and other fun activities
  • and many others!
