This year marks the Third Anniversary of the Great Tohoku Earthquake of Japan. Although three years have passed, there is still much that needs to be rebuilt. For the people there, recovery is still far from over. Let us give them new hope and reassure them that they are not forgotten. And send them messages of our continuing support from Seattle!

It is difficult to predict when disasters will happen, but the consequences of disasters are predictable. Efforts to prepare yourself, your family, your workplace and your neighborhood will go a long way in improving the response and recovery of your community.

Hear from our special panel of experts to understand the recovery and rebuilding of livelihoods and security in Tohoku on the Third Anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami. Moderated by JASSW Chair Sam Shepherd, the panel includes Dr. Charles Aanenson, CEO of Peace Winds America, and Seattle Times reporter Sandi Doughton, who recently returned from the Tohoku area. Also joining us will be the Fukushima Kenjinkai President Patsy Yamada.

Created out of the disaster were two new businesses featured at last year’s Shout Out: undefined Mr. Ogata’s Nori (dried seaweed) and Mrs. Sato’s “Kuwacha” tea. In addition, many hand made items such as pouches, table runners and bags from Shiogama, Japan

LIGHT UP NIPPON documents the trials and triumphs of dedicated volunteers led by Yoshitake Takada. Just five months after the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake, they lit up the skies in 10 locations over the Tohoku region of Japan with fireworks to buoy the spirits of the victims.

This documentary takes you on a whimsical and fantastic journey, where these magnificent fireworks displays captured the thoughts, prayers, hopes and dreams of so many people in Japan.

Te No Hirani Taiyou No Ie Project

“Taiyo No Ie,” located in Miyagi prefecture, was built as retreat housing for the Tohoku victims.

These houses were built with beautiful Japanese wood and use a natural energy source, providing an eco friendly facility where the people can gather and feel safe. We would like to raise funds for equipment like camping tents or sleeping bags for these guests.

Japan America Society of the State of Washington will put net proceeds of the sponsored amount toward the Tohoku Disaster Recovery Fund. This year, funds will go to NPO “Taiyo No Ie Project” to purchase needed materials and furnishings.
