Speakers

Misaki Takabayashi

Misaki Takabayashi is the current associate Vice President & Vice Dean of Graduate School at the OIST Graduate University. She has conducted and published various studies on coral reef ecology and ethnobiology, placing value on island sustainability and community-based biocultural conservation. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Biology at the University of Sydney and her PHD in Marine Science at the University of Queensland, Australia. 


John Garner

John Garner was born and raised in Alaska. He worked in the seafood processing business for about 25 years and is part-owner of Lafayette Fisheries and NorQuest Seafoods. Throughout his career, he has also been involved in many marine life and seafood-related non-profits, such as the Prince William Sound Science Center, Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative, and SeaShare. John retired in 2019.


Bill Dewey

Bill Dewey is Director of Public Affairs for Taylor Shellfish Farms, the largest producer of farmed shellfish in the United States and he has owned and operated his own shellfish farm in Samish Bay for 25 years.  He received his degree in shellfish biology from the University of Washington in 1981. Mr. Dewey works on environmental, human health, aquaculture and regulatory policy issues at the local, state and federal levels on behalf of Taylor Shellfish and the broader shellfish industry. He serves on a number of boards and committees locally and nationally including the Board of Directors of the National Aquaculture Association and the Pacific Shellfish Institute.


Makiko Coffland (Moderator) 

Makiko Coffland is an intellectual property attorney at Christensen O’Connor Johnson Kindness, representing clients in trademark, copyright, patent, and trade secret matters. Before becoming an attorney, Makiko studied marine biology and molecular biology and graduated from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the fields.
