Can capitalism be beneficial for all? Prime Minister Kishida has announced a plan to ensure just that for Japan, foreseeing a "New Capitalism” that spurs economic growth while building social equality and equity. Japan hopes that growth in commerce will achieve a "triple win” for business, society, and the economy.

One of the most famous entrepreneurs in Japanese history, Eiichi Shibusawa (1840-1931), had exactly this vision some 100 years ago. Shibusawa led the first large-scale business mission to the United States in 1909, sailing to Seattle on the American ship the Minnesota. In this event, we will look back on Shibusawa’s legacy for new ideas on how to address current and future challenges, facing Japan and Japan-US business relations.

Ken Shibusawa presents the motivation behind and key elements of Kishida’s “New Capitalism” plan for the Japanese economy. He will ground his discussion in the legacy of Eiichi Shibusawa and traditions of socially conscious capitalism.

Chief Executive Officer, Shibusawa and Company, Inc.

Mr. Ken Shibusawa founded Shibusawa and Company, Inc. in 2001, an advisory firm engaging multi-stakeholder dialogue among policy leaders, business executives, investment professionals and society at large. He also founded Commons Asset Management in 2008, a mutual fund dedicated to delivering cross- generational long-term investments to the Japanese household. In 2021, he joined Brunswick Group, a global strategic advisory firm. He is also director of Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives), advisor to the Office of the President at the University of Tokyo, steering group member of UNDP SDG Impact, member of the Council for New Form of Capitalism, established by Prime Minister Kishida. He is a frequent public speaker on a wide range of topics, especially regarding the modern-day interpretation of the legacy of his great-great father, Eiichi Shibusawa, who is known as the father of Japanese capitalism.

Noriyuki “Nori” SHIKATA was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs under Prime Minister Fumio KISHIDA in October 2021. Most recently, he was Assistant Minister/Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau of Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). He holds a B.A. in Law from Kyoto University and Master of Public Policy (MPP) from Harvard Kennedy School of Government. His Twitter handle is @norishikata.

Marie Anchordoguy
Professor / Chair - Japan Studies Program, University of Washington

Marie Anchordoguy is Professor of International Studies and East Asia Studies in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. She specializes in Japan’s political economy and business system. She is author of Reprogramming Japan: The High-Tech Crisis Under Communitarian Capitalism and numerous articles about Japan’s capitalist system in journals such as Business History Review, Research Policy, Political Science Quarterly, and International Organization.

Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics In International Affairs

Richard Katz is a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics In International Affairs, as well as a Special Correspondent for Weekly Toyo Keizai. For 20 years he published a monthly newsletter onJapan called “The Oriental Economist Report.” Now he publishes a free blog called “Japan Economy Watch” at https://richardkatz.substack.com/ He also taught about Japan’s economy as an adjunct lecturer at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at New York University.
