Kick-off our new JASSW-OIST Joint Speaker Series with the OIST Foundation and join us for a discussion with two fantastic women as we deepen our understanding of the SDGs through their experience with various outdoor activities - just in time for a fantastic summer season in Washington State!

Speakers

Sophia Danenberg

Sophia Danenberg was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in the Chicago area. She was first introduced to the world of climbing as a Fulbright Fellow at Keio University in Tokyo. She has climbed dozens of mountains since, and became the first Black woman to summit Mount Everest in 2006. Since 2009, she has been an International Policy Leader for the Boeing Company. Outside of work, she has played an active part in the community and currently serves as a board member for NatureBridge and a governor-appointed Washington State Parks and Recreation Commissioner.

Yuko Kakazu

Yūko Kakazu was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan. Her participation in a NASA-sponsored Space Camp inspired her to pursue a career related to space. After graduating from Okinawa Shogaku High School, she began her studies in the Graduate School of Science and Faculty of Science at Tohoku University. After graduating with her bachelor's degree from Tohoku University, she got her master's degree and Ph.D. in Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Kenji Ushimaru

Kenji Ushimaru has been engaged in a variety of technical, policy, and trade issues in the areas of energy and environmental science for over 40 years. He is currently President of Infra Innovations, a consulting firm specializing in energy and environmental issues. Kenji is a graduate of the University of Washington with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics. In the area of academics, Kenji has served from 2017 to 2019 as a Faculty Fellow in Environmental Science Research at the University of Montana.
