Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Mechanical and aerospace engineering is a newly created academic field that integrates traditional mechanical engineering with academic fields such as electrical and electronic engineering, information engineering, materials engineering, nuclear engineering, and life science. It covers the design, manufacturing, and control technologies for realizing the smart energy and intelligent systems in the 21st century. The basic ideas and policies of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is to be a world-leading unique individual professionals who maintain and improve the safe and confortable societies through the new creation of the advanced interdisciplinary technologies and academic bases.

The objects of research in the Department range from fine nano-scale systems in the atomic and molecular level to huge systems as big as the earth such as subterranean systems delving into the mysteries and dreams inside the earth and satellite systems for the space development. The faculty members with a variety of academic knowledge and experience in technology platforms are engaged in new creations of technologies for sustainable and comfortable social infrastructures from the view points of the integration of energy and information. Students and researchers, with their borderless backgrounds of many languages and nationalities, enjoy their study and research lives through the international collaboration and competition with friendly rivalry communication.

Why Choose Us?

The researchers and engineers who look ahead to the future and support social infrastructure must have an understanding of a wide range of academic disciplines, both in the humanities and sciences, along with world-leading knowledge and technologies in their field of specialty, in order to solve various problems in society and nature. They further need the ability to promote their own ideas in global society while accurately understanding the thoughts of others, carrying on discussions needed for working in cooperation toward mutual goals. In order to foster students so that they develop a grounding in each of these areas along with specialized abilities, from the first year of this Department they not only take classes for learning fundamental and specialized knowledge, but also experience various training and report on their experiences, helping to strengthen their ability to express themselves and to negotiate, along with foreign languages and other abilities. From their third year they begin looking ahead to graduate school, aiming to strengthen their specialized abilities by affiliating with a laboratory in one of the following seven courses, Mechanical Systems, Finemechanics, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Quantum Science and Energy Engineering, Environment and Energy Engineering and Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering. Here, they start engaging in research work together with their seniors. In addition, the International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course, taught entirely in English and one of the few such courses of its kind in Japan, lets students come into contact with many foreign students, studying alongside them and becoming more internationally aware. The offering of this course has led to an increase in students taking up the challenge of overseas language training, short-term study abroad, and foreign exchange programs. In this way, a thoroughgoing strict and warm program is offered to students for obtaining highly specialized skills matched to their individual intentions, and for going on to become active next-generation leaders. The compelling attractive campus welcomes to students who would like to discipline themselves of their own volition.
